Debit cards in Finland: the reality
Debit cards sometimes work for car rentals in Finland. But “sometimes” is a terrible plan when you’re standing at the counter with your family and luggage. Airport pickups are the most common refusal point.
When debit cards are more likely to be accepted
- City pickup (not the airport)
- Longer rentals
- Higher coverage that reduces excess
- Operator explicitly confirms debit acceptance in writing
Red flags that predict refusal
- Airport pickup
- Short rental (1–3 days)
- Low balance / low available funds
- No excess reduction, high liability
What to do if you only have a debit card
- Ask the operator before booking: “Is debit accepted for my pickup location?”
- Request written confirmation.
- Expect a higher hold amount.
- Consider switching to city pickup or using a different operator.
